The MIR was born on August 15, 1965, out of the con­flu­ence of sev­er­al small cur­rents of the crit­i­cal left that at that time opposed par­lia­men­tar­i­an­ism and the legal­ism of the major­i­ty of the left and aspired to con­struct a Marx­ist rev­o­lu­tion­ary orga­ni­za­tion, rup­tur­ing with elec­toral strate­gies and the state.

The ques­tion is how to devel­op, today in Chile, an anti-cap­i­tal­ist left, not dog­mat­ic or sec­tar­i­an or elec­tion­eer­ing or oppor­tunis­tic, able to debate a polit­i­cal pro­gram of clear rup­ture, but also help­ing in the short term to devel­op the uni­tary action, on the social and polit­i­cal front, which is use­ful for strength­en­ing pop­u­lar move­ments.
